Ask not what we can do for Lord Shiva but ask what He can do for us

Let's be honest. We would not worship Lord Shiva if he were not so easy to please. Infact, it is his quickness in responding to our prayers that attract billions to worship him. 

We have so many expectations from him that it might be useful to understand what are the five functions that he is supposed to perform (Maybe that's why he has five heads?). These functions are:

1. Creation (in the form of Brahma)
2. Maintenance (in the form of Vishnu)
3. Destruction (in the form of Mahadev)
4. Creation Illusion and hiding knowledge (I don't know which form this is in - perhaps Maya?)
5. Removing illusion and revealing knowledge (in the form of Dakshinamurti perhaps?)

I recently came across a fantastic book on the worship of Lord Shiva. It is written by Swami Sivananda of the the "Divine Life Society". It is very small book but is filled with must know information on Lord Shiva.

So if you are at a stage in your life where you want to worship Lord Shiva but do not know how to express your love for Shiva, you can read this book and get started. Please note that it does not describe the entire procedure of Shiva Poojan but does elaborate on the must do aspects of Shiva Poojan.
